Have you noticed the high price on your favorite chocolate bar?
This isn’t just giant corporations making massive profits (although in some cases that may have happened). This is about multiple threats hitting the cocoa industry hard.
@equalexchange works with and supports small farmer co-ops in the Dominican Republic, Peru, and Panama, and recently wrote a great article about why we’re seeing sky-high prices - as much as 90% higher than 18 months ago.
Climate change has played a major role. Drought, floods, and disease have decimated crops, leading to a limited global supply of cocoa. Underinvestment in cocoa farms has also led to poor labor conditions (with many farmers earning well under a livable income) and fewer resources to invest in climate resilient practices.
In some cases, massive cash rich corporations were able to buy up large portions of supply, which also drove prices to record highs. With so much competition on the global market, smaller manufacturers like Equal Exchange were squeezed and had to cut certain products and raise prices on others just to stay afloat.
Tariffs also played a role. For example, chocolate chips from Peru had a 10% tariff, while bars made in Switzerland had a 39% tariff. Equal Exchange had to pivot to another manufacturer in a country with lower tariffs. Now that tariffs have been deemed unconstitutional, that may help, but in many cases the damage to the supply chain may be hard to undo.
With these multiple pressures, prices may not come down for a while - so savor those bites of chocolate.
We’re grateful to work directly with Equal Exchange. They’re mission-based and committed to taking care of their producers as they have done for decades.
PS — also check out the Hakalau chocolate bars from @kulikefarm - grown, processed, and packaged by one of Treebird’s founders’ family - and purchased direct.
Sometimes things just don’t go the way we want them to. In this case, a fridge goes down and food goes to waste.
We are working on repair and/or replacement but in the meantime some products have moved to other places (ask a staff if you are wondering) or we may just be out for a little while.
This fridge has been in this store for a very long time (way before us, back when it was Mother’s Market) and was likely in some other local store before that. We will see if it’s worth repairing or if it’s time has come.
Losses like this are big for us. Lost product and a big repair bill always hurt but we are resilient.
Your support matters every day. #shoplocal #smallbusiness #resilience

Have you seen our amazing sales sprinkled throughout the store?
Thanks to all of you in our community who have continued to help us grow and our partnership with @infretailers , we are now getting some pretty fantastic sale prices on staple items in every isle (all 2 isles!?! 😄).
Some items sell super quick and we are doing our best to keep up with demand so if you see an empty spot just know we are working on restocking!
Some of these sales last 2 weeks, others last all month with more coming on other items once these ones disappear.
As a business that our community relies on to feed their families we are staying open Friday, but we stand with the nation as we mourn and quite honestly ask for better. It is our slow season and every dollar matters in this low margin business both for our team and for our small producers. We wish we could afford to do more.
We stand in solidarity with our community and country as we struggle with how to respond to the unnecessary loss of life that happened in Minnesota and many other places around our country before. We know that those who shop in our store come from all walks of life and we have tried hard to avoid alienating anyone by making political statements but there are times we just can’t stay silent and this is one of them.
What we are seeing happening in our community and our country with families being ripped apart and a government who seems to not care, can not stand.
We care. Our community cares. A lot.
Right now we are mourning and we are watching. We still have to show up and we know there is so much work to be done to bring our community together to heal and we are committed to doing that work.
If you shop on Friday, shop local. Your dollars are your vote and it matters.

In case you’ve ever wondered what happens to the compost from Treebird… no waste here!
One of our team members takes it home and feeds it to their sheep - making wonderful wool products.
We do our best accross the board to reduce waste and make sure that the energy it takes to produce our food is well used.
Us too @organicgrownco, us too 😊
We love working with companies and producers who share our values and Organically Grown Company is such an amazing partner.
As our local farms put their fields to bed for the winter, OGC continues to support small organic farms around the region, country, and world to provide fresh organic produce year round.
We are so grateful to work OGC and so many more producers directly along with our other distributors - it’s all these partnerships that’s made Treebird what are today.
